about

All of these recordings were made from fences in the Kent and East Sussex area of the UK.

It was initially a sample gathering exercise but developed into a kind of performance and interaction with the fences as instruments. On other occasions (Rye Harbour Fence 1) I recorded the clattering of objects blown against the fence with no interaction on my part.

Fences have a wide range of sounds, being tight wires and metal poles they instantly create a wind harp in the right conditions. They can be played by plucking, bowing or striking. The wind also makes things clatter against fences and that produces more of a “wind zither” effect.
